Are you prepared for bad weather?
Storm Weather Preparedness in Four Easy Steps.
Life in the Mid-West tends to experience a vast range of weather during the year. From scorching heat to towering snow banks, to hail and tornados; the Midwest definitely gets a dose of difficult weather to go along with each season. During the spring and summer months, thunderstorms and hailstorms can arise without warning causing the loss of power and dwelling damage.
1. Have your supplies ready:
Basic storm supplies consist of clean water and food. Perishable foods cannot be stored for long periods of time or cooked in the event of a power outage. On the other hand, canned or vacuum-sealed goods are able to last for a few months. Make sure you stock up on food that will last you through storm season in the event of an emergency.
2. Prepare the safe space:
Finding and preparing a safe space is the second step of storm weather preparedness. Safe spaces are areas usually within a basement that are surrounded by at least one or two concrete or brick walls. For example, a closet or bathroom situated at the base of the house near a concrete wall would be a good safe space. A safe space should be equipped with flashlights and batteries, a cell or home phone to call for help in case of an emergency, and blankets in case the storm lasts overnight.
3. Have a backup plan:
Thirdly, you need to have a backup plan. If your house is not equipped with a safe room or a basement, you need to find a safe spot to hide during a storm. A backup plan could be going to a friends or family member’s house, or if that isn’t possible a city or state building with a basement. Be prepared to move to a new safe spot if you absolutely have to.
4. Fill the gas tank in your cars:
Having a full tank of gas is the fourth key in storm weather preparedness. Having a full gas tank gives you the option of driving away from the storm if you are unable to find a secure safe spot. Ensure that your car is also stocked up on basic needs such as water, snacks, medical supplies, an adequate change of clothing, pet food and supplies if needed, and bedding.
