4 Signs to Replace Your Windows

May 18, 2023

Are you wondering if it’s time for a window replacement project? While house windows are designed to last for years on end, they will eventually need to be replaced just like any other part of your home. If you’re not sure if it’s time to have them replaced or not, here are four signs that it’s time to replace your windows.

1. The Windows Are 20+ Years Old

If you happen to know the age of your windows, you can get a good sense of when they need to be replaced. Windows that were installed 20 years ago or more are nearing the end of their lifespan. These older windows may or may not be showing signs of deterioration, but their ability to insulate and protect your home doesn’t come close to what today’s replacement windows have to offer.

2. The Windows Are Drafty or Poorly Insulated

If you can feel the wind through your windows even when they’re closed, these drafty windows need to be replaced. Additionally, if you can feel the outdoor temperatures, whether heat or cold air, when you touch the interior of your windows, the lack of insulation may be contributing to large amounts of energy loss in your home.

3. The Windows are Damaged or Deteriorating

Cracked glass, rotting wood frames, damaged seals, and other signs of deterioration are key indicators that your windows need replacement. Additionally, condensation between the panes of glass is an indicator of an air seal failure, which means your windows are no longer performing the way they should.

4. The Windows Don’t Open and Close Properly

Other than picture windows or other stationary windows that are not designed to open, you should ensure that your windows are able to open and close properly. If they’re constantly stuck, difficult to lift open, or don’t quite seal properly to close, this can be a serious safety concern for your home. It’s important to have them replaced with a set of functional replacement windows, as they serve as emergency egresses for your home.
